The Old Grammar School

Tucked away in a quiet corner of the churchyard you will find another of our spaces licensed for Civil Ceremonies. This beautiful two-storey mediaeval Grammar School, one of the oldest school buildings in the country, is sure to take your breath away. Its timber-framed construction and quirky architecture, which includes a re-used church window and wall panelling made from old cabinet-doors, will ensure that your guests are impressed by their surroundings. A peaceful, intimate space, it is the perfect venue for all sorts of occasions, from business meetings to wedding receptions.

The Old Grammar School has two floors with separate access to each. Please note that there is no disabled access to the upper floor, which can only be reached via an external staircase.

Both floors have been used as school rooms for much of their past, particuarly the upper floor. The lower floor may have provided lodgings for the school master for a while, and probably housed the most famous of Kings Norton's school masters, the Reverend Thomas Hall (1610-1665), a devout puritan who lost his living, livelihood and health during the Civil War. His kindly parishoners ensured his care in his last few months, and he is buried in the churchyard, but with no marker or headstone, at his own request, wishing to be treated exactly the same as his congregation. The lower floor is almost certainly newer than the upper floor.
